Inhofe Co-sponsors Military Marriage Bill

File photo

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe has joined fellow Republican Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi in sponsoring a bill regarding marriages on military bases.

The "Military Religious Freedom Act" was announced Tuesday by Inhofe and Wicker in a news release.

The bill would prohibit marriage or "marriage-like" ceremonies on military bases unless the marriage is between one man and one woman. It would also allow military chaplains to refuse to conduct ceremonies involving same-sex marriages.

The Department of Defense last year authorized military chaplains to perform same-sex marriages in accordance with state law.

That authorization allows the chaplains to participate in ceremonies on or off military bases in states that recognize same-sex marriage.
