Tulsa, Oklahoma – On today's edition of StudioTulsa, we speak with Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier, who have together collaborated on a new translation of "The Second Sex," the pioneering philosophical text by Simone de Beauvoir that first appeared in the late 1940s --- and that is widely seen as one of the founding works of feminism. Borde and Malovany-Chevallier will deliver a co-lecture concerning this new translation, which was recently published by Knopf to universal acclaim, tonight (Monday the 25th) at 7pm in the Allen Chapman Activity Center on the TU campus. (For more about this event, please go to the following link: http://www.utulsa.edu/academics/colleges/Henry-Kendall-College-of-Arts-and-Sciences/Departments-and-Schools/Department-of-Political-Science/News%20Events%20and%20Publications/Events_Calendar/2010/October/SSIGLecture.aspx.) As these two translators note on our show today, even 60 years after its initial publication, "The Second Sex" remains an eye-opening and pertinent meditation on womanhood --- a triumphant and genuinely revolutionary book that is now, finally, appearing in English in an authoritative, reliable, and unfiltered translation.
