Highway Birth

By Associated Press

Tulsa, OK – Okla. baby born on highway on way to hospital

TULSA, Okla. (AP) An expectant mother in labor and on her way to the hospital instead ended up giving birth beside a Tulsa highway.

Emergency Medical Services Authority spokesman Chris Stevens says paramedics arrived at 12:48 a.m. Friday to help the mother, 21-year-old Cassie Apple, give birth to a healthy baby boy in the backseat of a parked car.

Apple had been heading to a hospital with her husband Wayne and two other family members but when it became apparent the baby would not wait, they pulled the car over and someone called 911.

After her son was born, paramedics took the Apples and their baby to the hospital.

Stevens says EMSA paramedics "train for literally everything" and that their vehicles come equipped with an obstetrician kit.
