High Fire Danger

Choctaw, OK – Choctaw homes evacuated because of grass fire

CHOCTAW, Okla. (AP) Emergency officials have allowed residents who were asked to leave their homes because of a large grass fire to return.

About 30 homes in Choctaw were evacuated Tuesday afternoon as crews battled the blaze. There were no reports of injuries.

Del City fire Maj. Brandon Pursell says the fire near S.E. 15th Street and Indian Meridian Road had burned between 250 and 300 acres, but no structures were damaged. Crews have contained the blaze enough to diminish the threat to the houses, but Pursell says it may continue to burn because it's difficult to reach.

Most of Oklahoma is under a Red Flag fire warning through Wednesday.

According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts of 30 miles per hour were reported in central Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon.
