Health Care Costs

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. lawmakers discuss new health care law

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) State health officials estimate an additional 140,000 Oklahomans will become enrolled in Medicaid once the new federal health care law takes effect, costing the state an extra $24 million annually.

Officials with the Oklahoma Health Care Authority presented those figures Wednesday during a meeting with lawmakers on how the new law will affect Oklahoma.

OHCA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Cindy Roberts says a total of 250,000 Oklahomans would be eligible for Medicaid under the new law, but not all of those will enroll.

Health officials also told lawmakers the state must notify the federal government by January 2013 about whether it plans to set up an online marketplace, or health insurance exchange, for residents to shop for and buy health insurance.
