Oklahoma's top auditor says the FBI and the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office are interested in a critical audit that indicates more than $1.7 million in utility revenue collected by a small southeastern Oklahoma city was never deposited.
State Auditor & Inspector Gary Jones said Friday a forensic audit by his agency shows utility revenue collected between July 2009 and July 2016 by the city of Hartshorne.
Jones says auditors believe utility deposits received before 2009 were also not deposited and there could be "substantially more" missing revenue. The audit also indicates former city officials misappropriated funds.
Jones says the audit was turned over to federal and state officials to determine whether laws were violated.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma's top auditor says the FBI and the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office are interested in a critical audit that indicates more than $1.7 million in utility revenue collected by a small southeastern Oklahoma city was never deposited.
State Auditor & Inspector Gary Jones said Friday a forensic audit by his agency shows utility revenue collected between July 2009 and July 2016 by the city of Hartshorne, located 144 miles (232 kilometers) southeast of Oklahoma City, was never deposited in municipal bank accounts.
Jones says auditors believe utility deposits received before 2009 were also not deposited and there could be "substantially more" missing revenue. The audit also indicates former city officials misappropriated funds.
