Guthrie Stops New Building Permits in Some Areas

KWGS News Map

GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — Guthrie city leaders have declared a moratorium on new building permits in some rural areas after losing a $1.27 million lawsuit brought by a rural water district.

The Rural Water District 1 of Logan County filed a lawsuit against Guthrie nine years ago, alleging the city was not allowed to install water lines and sell water outside city limits that were set in 1972. A jury on Nov. 14 agreed and awarded the water district $1.27 million to cover lost revenue.

In turn, the Guthrie City Council this month approved a moratorium on certain new building permits until they can reach an agreement with the water district on how to develop infrastructure in any disputed area.

The city and the water district say existing customers shouldn't see any service disruptions.
