Group to Study Rising Earthquake Frequency in Oklahoma

Oklahoma Geological Survey

A new group has been created that will study seismic activity in Oklahoma.

Fallin announced the creation of the Coordinating Council on Seismic Activity on Thursday at her fourth annual energy conference.

Oklahoma Secretary of Energy and Environment Michael Teague will head the council. It will involve state agencies like the geological survey and the Corporation Commission, OU and OSU researchers, oil and gas groups, and state legislators.

The number of earthquakes magnitude 3.0 or greater has jumped from single digits in 2008 to around 150 already this year.

Fallin acknowledged the state is experiencing more earthquakes now than in years past and her goal is to link researchers, the energy industry and lawmakers.
