OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has ordered the Oklahoma Legislature to convene a special session on Sept. 3 consider restoring laws overturned by the state Supreme Court that were designed to cut businesses' legal liability costs.
Fallin signed an executive order Monday authorizing the special session, the first since she took office in 2011. Its subject will be limited to restoring a bill adopted in 2009 that was designed to reduce the number of frivolous lawsuits and medical malpractice claims filed in Oklahoma.
In June, the Supreme Court invalidated the law, saying it violated the single-subject rule in the state Constitution and amounted to unconstitutional logrolling, or the passing of legislation that contains multiple subjects.
Fallin says without a special session, lawmakers must wait until next year to take it up.
