Glanz Submits Letter of Resignation, Special Election Set to Replace Him

The Oklahoma sheriff indicted following an investigation into his office after a volunteer deputy shot an unarmed man has submitted his letter of resignation to the governor.

Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz told Gov. Mary Fallin that he'll step down and retire effective Nov. 1.

Fallin has set a primary election March 1 and a general election April 5 to replace Glanz.

Glanz was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on two misdemeanor counts. One accuses Glanz of refusing to perform his official duties by not quickly turning over information about volunteer deputy Robert Bates during an internal investigation.

Bates, Glanz's longtime friend and a former insurance executive, has said he mistook his handgun for a stun gun before shooting a restrained man in April.
