Gary Burton, Jazz Master of the Vibraphone, Appears Tomorrow Night at OK Mozart with Chick Corea.

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Every so often, we speak with an actual legend on this program. On today's StudioTulsa, which is just such an occasion, the legend in question is the jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. He'll be playing a duet concert with Chick Corea tomorrow night (Thursday the 18th) at the OK Mozart Festival in Bartlesville. Burton and Corea's recent double-CD recording, "The New Crystal Silence" (Concord Records), was awarded a Grammy last year. It's one of several Grammy Awards that Burton (b. 1943) has won over the course of a long, prolific, and stylistically wide-ranging career in music. (Indeed, many of the collaborations between Corea and Burton --- they have been sporadically performing and recording as a duet for the last 35 years or so --- have been honored with a Grammy.) Burton was named Downbeat Magazine's Jazzman of the Year in 1968 --- and he remains the youngest person ever to receive that title. He also speaks with host Rich Fisher about his newest recording, which came out earlier this year: "Quartet Live" (also on Concord). And at the conclusion of today's show, our commentator Connie Cronley has some solid points to make on the socially taboo subjects of politics and religion.
