Free Breakfast and Lunch Expanded in TPS

File photo

All students enrolled in the elementary grades at Tulsa Public Schools will be eligible to receive breakfast and lunch free of charge during the 2016-2017 school year through the USDA's Community Eligibility Provision. Parents and guardians of elementary level students will no longer need to complete free and reduced meal applications in order for children to participate in the School Breakfast and National School Lunch program.

"A healthy breakfast is a great start to the school day," said Superintendent Deborah Gist. "We know that students are better able to focus on learning when they're well fed, and we are so pleased to be able to offer nutritious meals to all of our elementary school students at no cost to families."

The Community Eligibility Provision will be effective for Tulsa elementary students for the next five years. Families with children in secondary schools will still need to complete free and reduced meal applications in order for secondary students to benefit from the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Program.

"This is our pilot year for district participation in the Community Eligibility Provision, so we're building strong foundations by starting with our youngest learners in year one," said Gist.
