Foresters Host Walk in the Forest Saturday

Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness

Turkey Mountain is the place to be Saturday if you ever wanted to learn more about Oklahoma’s 12 million-plus acres of forest.

Jerí Irby with Oklahoma Forestry Services says many people don’t know the state has that much forest or the forest’s economic benefit to the state.

"It adds over $2 billion to our state's economy every year, so it's important for the people of Oklahoma to know what their forests are and how they help them," Irby said.

Foresters are conservationists first, and stops along the hike will reflect that.

"One of our stations talks about invasive species that are affecting the forests of Oklahoma, and so people will learn about those bugs and plants that are in Turkey Mountain's forest," Irby said.

All ages are invited to the Walk in the Forest. It goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be several educational stations, and a limited number of people will get a pine seedling to take home.

"It's a loblolly pine seeding, and we'll have foresters there to talk about that specific tree, as well as how to properly plant it in your backyard," Irby said.

Turkey Mountain is accessible from 71st Street at Elwood Avenue.
