FBI Warns of Phone Scam Involving Student Loan Debt

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The FBI in Oklahoma City is warning residents of a telephone scam involving demands for repayment of student loans.

The agency says in a news release that someone claiming to be an FBI agent is making calls and has threatened some people with arrest if fees are not paid immediately. The FBI also says the telephone number used by the scammer is that of the FBI field office — a practice known as "spoofing."

The caller often knows the name of the intended victim and has called both personal cellphones and work phone numbers.

The FBI says it doesn't call citizens to notify them they have committed a crime and the agency does not ask for money.
