EMSA Issues Tulsa Metro Heat Alert

KWGS News File Photo

EMSA is issuing a HEAT ALERT for Saturday, June 20th, 2015. EMSA issues an alert when we receive five or more heat-related calls in a 24-hour period,

Since midnight to 7 p.m. Saturday, EMSA has responded to eight heat-related calls. Of those six, four people transported to a local hospitals.

Ages of the patients ranged from 28 to 90, and included symptoms ranging from heat exhaustion to chest pains.

EMSA is encouraging everyone to take precautions.

Tips for staying healthy in the heat:

·         PRE-HYDRATION is key in preventing heat-related illness.  Drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement drinks several hours prior to and during long exposure to the summer heat.

·         Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat if working outdoors and take plenty of shade breaks.

·         No alcohol or caffeine.

·         If you do not have air conditioning, find a cooling station or public space (such as libraries or malls) during the day.

·         Also, don’t limit your air conditioning. If you are concerned about your electric bill, call PSO. They have programs that could possibly help you.

·         Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors.

We urge everyone to keep a cell phone with them. If they experience any symptoms of overheating to call 911.

REMINDER – Never leave a child or animal in a car without supervision.
