Duncan Running Low on Water

City of Duncan

DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) — Duncan officials are looking for other sources of funds to help the city pump water from Clear Creek Lake amid an ongoing drought.

The Oklahoman reports that Duncan did not receive state drought relief grants, which were awarded two weeks ago by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. Officials are seeking federal grants to fund the Clear Creek Lake project, and are also looking at other water alternatives including drilling water wells.

Duncan applied for a $500,000 drought mitigation grant late last year to draw water from the reservoir, which the city has not used in decades. The board's executive director J.D. Strong said because there are limited funds, most of the grants go to smaller towns that have fewer resources.

The area has been in a drought since October 2010.
