Doctor: Surgery Stabilizes Tulane Player's Spine

Tulane University

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A Tulane University football player has had surgery to stabilize his fractured spine.

Doctor Greg Stewart, Tulane's director of sports medicine, says Devon Walker had a three-hour surgery Sunday at Saint Francis hospital in Tulsa.

Walker was recovering in stable condition and was expected to stay in the intensive-care unit for the next few days.

The doctor said it could be several days before they could assess the condition of his injury.

Walker was injured just before halftime in Saturday's game against Tulsa when he and a teammate tackled a receiver, apparently smashing their helmets together.
