District Attorney Wants Mental Health Evaluation for Michael Bever

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said he asked a judge to order an 18-year-old man accused of killing his parents and three siblings to undergo a full mental health evaluation with a doctor chosen by prosecutors.

Kunzweiler said Tuesday after a closed-door hearing in the case of Michael Bever that Bever's attorneys have submitted a psychological report from their doctor and that the state should get to conduct its own inquiry, but Bever refused to participate.

Bever was being represented by public defender Rob Nigh, who died Sept. 24. New public defender Corbin Brewster is handling Bever's case now.

Bever and his brother Robert were charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the 2015 stabbing deaths of their parents and three of five siblings in their Broken Arrow home. Their 13-year-old sister survived the attack, and the brothers were also charged with attempting to kill her. They did not harm their 2-year-old sister.

Robert Bever pleaded guilty to all counts last year. He received six life sentences in a plea bargain.
