Disaster Aid

Tushka, OK – Disaster declaration for Oklahoma approved

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) President Obama has approved a major disaster declaration for Oklahoma for tornadoes that hit the state last month.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Monday's approval of Gov. Mary Fallin's request for federal disaster assistance means individuals and business owners in Canadian, Delaware, Grady, Kingfisher, Logan and McClain counties who were affected by the May 22-25 tornadoes may now qualify for disaster aid.

More counties may be added to the declaration later.

According to FEMA, assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

Federal funding also is available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Ten people died when tornadoes touched down May 24.
