Dewey v. Drew

Mayor Bartlett and City Council Attorney Drew Rees
Mayor Bartlett and City Council Attorney Drew Rees

By Associated Press

Tulsa, Okla. – TULSA, Okla. (AP) Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett says the City Council is not authorized by the city charter to have its own attorney and is demanding that the current attorney for the council resign.

Bartlett's attorney has sent a letter to City Council attorney Drew Rees demanding that he resign immediately. The letter obtained by the Tulsa World also questions whether city funds were misappropriated in paying for a council attorney.

Rees says he's only briefly reviewed the letter and has no plans to resign. He says it appears there is a misunderstanding of how the city provides legal services to departments, boards, commissions and authorities.

The letter comes as the council investigates whether Bartlett and his chief of staff lied to councilors about a federal police grant.
