Development Authority Wants North Tulsans' Feedback on Proposals Near Emerson Elementary

North Tulsa residents will be asked to weigh in on potential redevelopment projects near Emerson Elementary.

Tulsa Development Authority received two proposals for property across Latimer Street from the school and wants neighborhood associations to review them.

One calls for 134 units of affordable senior housing. Patricia Williams presented the proposal to TDA and said it will be a mixed-use project.

"The other thing is convenience to the community as well — grocery store, we definitely need that. Restaurant — we need that. We want to have cleaners, you know, a banking center," Williams said.

Capital Homes owner David Charney wants to build up to 16 single-family homes similar to ones in the Kendall-Whittier area. Down payment and closing cost assistance are part of Charney’s pitch

"We think it is a prime opportunity to attract young families who want to attend Emerson Elementary School to invest in a new home in an area that is going to continue to stabilize," Charney said.

Though Williams and Charney are eyeing the same property, they see merit in each other’s proposals and hope area residents will speak up.

"His proposal's a good idea for owning a home," Williams said.

"The are needs both uses, and I'm supportive of both concepts," Charney said.

TDA plans to put the proposals on its website. Its next meeting is Nov. 3.
