Democratic Party Leader Calls for Hofmeister's Resignation

The head of the Oklahoma Democratic Party is calling for the resignation of Republican State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister, who is facing felony charges accusing her of illegally raising money for her 2014 election bid.

Democratic Party Chairman Mark Hammons said Monday Hofmeister should step down "for the good of education and the good of teachers."

Hofmeister pleaded not guilty last week and was freed on $8,000 bond.

Prosecutors have alleged Hofmeister conspired with others to funnel money into an "independent expenditure" group to finance a negative ad campaign against her Republican opponent in 2014.

After charges were filed last week, Hofmeister said she had no plans to step down and that she would "vigorously defend" her integrity and reputation against the allegations.
