Deer Hunter believed Drowned in Southeastern Oklahoma

KWGS News File Photo

FORT TOWSON, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a deer hunter is believed to have drowned after following a wounded deer into the Kiamichi River near Fort Towson.

The OHP says 51-year-old Stephen Newton of Sawyer was bow hunting Friday with his daughter when the daughter shot a deer. The deer then ran into the river and Newton followed the animal in an attempt to retrieve it, however he went under water and did not resurface.

Newton's body has not yet been recovered.
