Deadline Extended for Artist Fellowship Program

There’s more time for artists to apply for a new fellowship to work in the Tulsa region.

Stanton Doyle with the George Kaiser Family Foundation said they’re trying to recruit artists to come to or stay in Tulsa.

"And the primary objective is to provide incentives for artists to move to Tulsa, provide them with a stipend and the resources to create their art here, and just contribute to our community," Doyle said. "We feel there's a real value in having artists live and work in our community."

Applications are due April 3 for the fellowships, which include a stipend and housing. Doyle said other communities have similar programs.

"There's incentives to help artists buy homes and provide housing for them," Doyle said. "We looked into those, but we felt the most direct way was simply to find artists and give them housing and workspace and some money to live and create."

Early career artists get a $15,000 stipend, while mid-career artists get $25,000. Doyle said the goal is bigger than just giving away money.

"We'll have a kind of a light social program that we'll invite them to participate in where they can meet artists in the city, interact with the different arts organizations and definitely try to integrate them into the community as much as we can."

A national panel of artists, critics and curators will select up to 15 artists for the fellowships. The fellows will start living and working in the Brady Arts District Jan. 4, 2016.
