Damage Reported From Twin Quakes

File photo

Moderate damage is reported after two 4.2 magnitude earthquakes struck in northern Oklahoma.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports both quakes were near the town of Breckenridge on Sunday, northeast of Enid and about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City.

Garfield County Emergency Management Director Mike Honigsberg said Monday that bricks were split or pulled from walls, and walls and ceilings are cracked.

No injuries are reported.

The first temblor struck about 5:15 p.m. and the second at 9:40 p.m. Smaller quakes of magnitude 2.7 and 2.6 struck early Monday in the same area.

Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years, many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and gas production. Regulators have directed several oil and gas producers to close or reduce the volume of injection wells.
