Oklahoma City, OK – Teacher disfigured in fire derides damage caps
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A Collinsville teacher whose face was disfigured in an operating room fire is speaking out against a legislative plan to limit pain and suffering damages in lawsuits.
Connie Plumlee says she has suffered excruciating pain recovering from the burns that resulted after a cauterizing tool ignited alcohol on her face and body.
A bill approved in the Senate last week would limit pain-and-suffering damages to $250,000. Republican leaders say it's one of several changes to the state's civil justice system that will benefit doctors, businesses and industry in Oklahoma by keeping insurance rates low.
But even some Republicans say the changes go too far.
