Commission Orders 2 Disposal Wells to Shut Down After Quakes

OCC

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is asking that two wastewater disposal wells in the Luther and Wellston area be shut down following recent earthquakes.

The commission's letter released Friday also asks that volumes be reduced at 19 other wells in the area.

The commission cites magnitude 3.9 and 3.7 earthquakes reported by the Oklahoma Geological Survey on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The wells the commission wants shut down are operated by Hulen Operating Co. and New Dominion LLC and are within three miles of a centrally located point between the two earthquakes. The wells that are to reduce volume are within 10 miles of the point.

Scientists have linked an increase in magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes in Oklahoma to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production.
