City Councilors Heading to Dallas for Arkansas River Inspiration

Tulsa city councilors are going to Dallas to get ideas about future Arkansas River development.

Councilor Phil Lakin is behind the trip, and an REI outdoor goods store is on the itinerary.

"This is a way to just better look into the possibilities for restaurants and other commercial uses that could or could not be located along the river," Lakin said. "Before we decide — if we ever have to decide anything — we better be sure we know what the good and the bad is."

They’ll tour three projects in Dallas proper Tuesday, paying attention to how buildings are integrated into a trail system and how mixed-use projects fit in. They’ll also take a look at an outdoor retail development with top-notch volleyball courts built into it.

"People seem to indicate that this is something we could replicate in Tulsa if we're going to put good volleyball facilities in front of our volleyball community," Lakin said.

Councilors will make four stops in the Fort Worth area Wednesday. Those will focus on riverfront development, including a presentation from the head of the Trinity River Vision Authority.

Seven or eight councilors will go. Jack Henderson has prior commitments.

Councilors will get travel expenses up to $2,500 for gas, food and lodging.
