Children's Home to Close

Ponca City, OK – Home for children in Ponca City set to close

PONCA CITY, Okla. (AP) Supporters of the American Legion Children's Home in Ponca City are looking for a way to keep the home to 44 children open.

The Oklahoma American Legion's executive board voted last month to close the home on Dec. 31. Board President Art Besa issued a statement to The Oklahoman saying there are unspecified "financial constraints" and that board didn't feel the home is fulfilling its mission to house the children of military personnel.

The home was established in 1928 for children who lost parents in World War I. About 30 years ago it began accepting children in DHS custody.

American Legion Auxiliary member Diane Beekman says she's hoping Legionnaires will step forward to fight plans to close the facility.
