Vinita, OK – Oklahoma boy killed after being struck by car

VINITA, Okla. (AP) Authorities are investigating the death of a two-year-old boy who was struck by a car after wandering into a Vinita street.

Police say the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday along Tahlequah Avenue.

Vinita Assistant Police Chief Barry Armstrong told KTUL-TV the child walked up out of a steep ditch near his home and into the street. A passing driver saw the child and attempted to swerve, but it was too late.

The boy was later pronounced dead at a Vinita hospital. His name hasn't been released.

Investigators are trying to determine why the boy was himself along the roadway and not being supervised by his parents.

Officials administered a standard breath analysis test on the driver, but Armstrong says it doesn't appear the driver did anything wrong.
