Tahlequah, OK – Boren: Law blocks HUD block of $33M for Cherokees

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Congress Dan Boren says a law he authored prevents federal housing authorities from blocking $33 million in aid to Cherokee Nation.

Boren, a Democrat, told the Tulsa World for a Sunday story that the federal Housing and Urban Development agency went beyond its authority in blocking the payment.

The agency froze the funds after a tribal court found that descendants of former slaves are not members of the Cherokee Nation.

Boren says he's been in talks with HUD officials and that he hopes the agency reverses its position.
