Cherokee Fire Dancers Deployed to California

Cherokee Nation

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — Twenty Cherokee Nation Fire Dancers are being sent to California to help fight wildfires.

The tribe says the Fire Dancers were deployed Wednesday and will work up to 16-hour shifts each day to help suppress fires and to keep other fires from starting.

The firefighters will join five other Fire Dancers who left earlier this month and remain in California to help fight the fires.

The group is called up by the U.S. Forestry Department.
