CHELSEA, Okla. (AP) — An assistant police chief in Oklahoma says his town board has pitted officers against administrators by voting to retain a top official who he says tried to pressure a rookie officer into letting an area businessman go during a traffic stop.
The Chelsea Town Board voted 3-1 Tuesday to keep Town Administrator Kenny Weast after reviewing a dashboard recording of the DUI arrest.
Chelsea Police Assistant Chief Travis Hogan says Weast intervened during the March 3 traffic stop. He says the officer refused to let Weast take businessman Brian Haggard home.
A message left Wednesday for Weast at City Hall wasn't immediately returned.
Haggard is charged with drunken driving. Attorney William Higgins says he is gathering evidence to determine Haggard's legal options.
The board will discuss the rookie officer's employment next week.
