Charity Sued

Oklahoma City, OK – Ex-accountants sue charity

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A lawsuit has alleged that Feed The Children owes $1.1 million in back taxes and an official with the charity tried to cover it up.

Plaintiffs Stephanie Dean and Stefani Hovarter accused the charity in a wrongful termination lawsuit of retaliating against them for informing the board about "potential fraud or illegality."

Feed The Children officials declined comment Friday.

The accountants and an accounting supervisor notified the state Tax Commission Sept. 17 about the delinquency.

The accountants told the board in a memo that the charity owed about $1.1 million in "use" taxes for purchases from Jan. 1, 2002, to June 30.

They also alleged that chief financial officer Christy Tharp knew about the problem but didn't report it.

Tharp couldn't be reached for comment.
