Cause of Students' Illnesses at Tulsa Jail Unknown

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Officials haven't determined what caused a group of Tulsa elementary school students to get sick during a visit at the Tulsa County jail.

Fifty-four students and five adults from Bell Elementary School were on a tour at the facility Thursday when the students began complaining of headaches and nausea. Officials say 30 students fell ill.

St. John Medical Center emergency room Doctor Michael Smith told the Tulsa World that blood tests administered to 20 students who were treated at that hospital showed they had been exposed to higher-than-normal levels of carbon monoxide.

Fire Department spokesman Tim Smallwood said hazardous material crews tested the bus that transported the students and found no dangerous gases.

Smith said it could be difficult to determine where the children were exposed to the gas.
