On this installment of ST, we are pleased to speak once again with the author, critic, former librarian, and die-hard book-lover Nancy Pearl, who's well-known for her frequent appearances on NPR's Morning Edition, her tireless championing of old or out-of-print titles, and her "Book Lust" series of books about books. Nancy used to live in Tulsa, and she's been the book reviewer for this program for 20+ years --- indeed, while she usually joins us by phone from her home in Seattle, this time around, Nancy is with us in the studio. This is because she's in town to deliver a Seed Sower Lecture Series tonight (Wednesday the 2nd) at 6:30pm at the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Learning Center. Her lecture --- entitled "The Pleasures and Perils of a Life of Reading" --- is free to the public, but seating is limited; please see this link for more info on this event. As you'd expect, what we're chatting with Nancy about is books, books, books --- including, at the outset, "The Soul of Viktor Tronko" by David Quammen, "The Girls From the Five Great Valleys" by Elizabeth Savage, "Not This Bear!" by Bernice Myers, and other current or forthcoming volumes in Nancy's ongoing Rediscoveries series at Amazon.com. From there, we go on to cover a few recent-ish titles from across the board; these are all books that Nancy says anyone looking for a great read --- or a great gift --- will want to consider:
FIVE CAME BACK (as well as SCENES FROM A REVOLUTION) by Mark Harris
UNDERSTORIES by Tim Horvath
AMERICANAH: A NOVEL by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL: LIFE AND DEATH IN A STORM-RAVAGED HOSPITAL by Sheri Fink.
THE WIND IS NOT A RIVER by Brian Payton
