Board Meeting Set

Oklahoma City, OK – Barresi, education board to discuss duties
MURRAY EVANS,Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The state Board of Education and state Superintendent Janet Barresi are set to meet for the first time since Gov. Mary Fallin signed into law a bill stripping the board of most of its powers.

The board meeting scheduled for Monday had been set for April 28 but was postponed because of the lack of a quorum.

After a contentious meeting in January, during which the board rejected three of Barresi's proposed hires, the Legislature passed the bill taking away most of the board's powers, including the authority to develop a budget for public schools, and giving them to the superintendent.

The bill won't take effect for a few months, but an item on Monday's agenda could include a vote "regarding assignment of duties" to the state superintendent.
