LANGSTON, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma State University Board of Regents has approved a gift from the Leon Polk Smith Foundation that will bring the influential work of an Oklahoma-born artist to the OSU Museum of Art.
The foundation is donating more than 750 works on paper to the art museum. The gift was formally accepted Friday during the board's meeting in Langston.
The gift will create the largest public works-on-paper study collection of the art of Leon Polk Smith, who was born in 1906 and died in 1996. Smith moved to New York City in 1945 and pioneered a style of geometric abstraction that laid the foundation for minimalism in the 1960s.
Museum director Victoria Berry says it's the largest number of works donated by a single owner to the OSU's art museum.
