Blast at Oil Field Investigated

By Associated Press

Weleetka, OK – Federal agency to investigate fatal oil site blast

WELEETKA, Okla. (AP) The U.S. Chemical Safety Board says it is investigating a tank explosion at an oil site in Weleetka that killed one person.

CSB officials announced Wednesday that the 21-year-old victim died of burns from the April 14 blast and fire.

A call to the Okfuskee County Sheriff's office seeking information about the victim wasn't immediately returned. Deputies last week said two people were injured, one critically, but their names weren't released.

CSB board member William Wark says the board is concerned about oil site explosions that kill young people in rural areas of oil-producing states.

The Chemical Safety Board investigates industrial chemical accidents but doesn't issue citations or fines.

It does make safety recommendations to plants, industry organizations, labor groups and regulatory agencies.
