Attorneys for Condemned Inmate Seek Clemency

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Attorneys for an Oklahoma inmate scheduled to die for stabbing a prison worker to death in 1998 are asking a state board to recommend sparing his life.

A clemency hearing is scheduled Friday for 53-year-old John Marion Grant, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death for killing corrections worker Gay Carter, who was stabbed 16 times at Dick Connor Correctional Center in Hominy.

Grant is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Feb. 19, but his attorneys are asking the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to recommend to the governor that she spare his life.

Grant is one of 21 death row inmates who are suing to have their executions halted, arguing that the state's current lethal injection method is unconstitutional.
