Here's what we posted on this date two years ago, while snickering like a teenager.

  • The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation announced a new grant program this week, supporting 21 American performers with at least a multi-year, unrestricted grant of $225,000. Among the recognized are musicians Don Byron, Bill Frisell, John Hollenbeck, Vijay Iyer and Nicole Mitchell.
  • Lots of interesting reads in JazzTimes. Saxophonist Darius Jones thwarts all category. Singer Little Jimmy Scott, 85, was interviewed. Paul Simon met Wynton Marsalis in concert. And for bassist Butch Warren, jazz was literally survival.
  • The hit record Jazz Samba turned 50 today. Here's the story of how the record which broke bossa nova to the U.S. was made in a Washington, D.C. church.
  • Claudia Acuña played a show at the National Museum of American History for Jazz Appreciation Month. There's video of the whole thing. More of the Chilean-born vocalist, who reflects South American traditions in her music, on NPR Music.
  • RIP Art Jenkins, long of the Sun Ra Arkestra. RIP George Mesterhazy, pianist known especially for accompanying singers. Remembering Bob Brookmeyer in a ceremony.
  • Charles Lloyd played a gig in his childhood hometown of Memphis for the first time since 1964. Million-selling Charles Lloyd! They recognized him on Beale Street too.
  • Wallace Roney interview in Revivalist. "Freddie Hubbard is one of the greatest trumpeters on the planet, but Miles knew he had something in his back pocket that would make Freddie go, 'What?'"
  • A song called "Trayvon" is on Christian Scott's upcoming record. He talks about it here, and it's also available for streaming.
  • Jazz releases coming out on Record Store Day this weekend, via KPLU.
  • Actually a good look at the state of Cuban music today, however brief.
  • A new Hank Mobley recording from 1953 was found and released. JazzWax has info on the early date from the great saxophonist.
  • Ebony actually covers jazz, in spotlighting a few young musicians (Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, Christian Scott) for whom border-crossing is second nature.
  • Some thoughts about the jazz ecosystem. The author is the founder of Thirsty Ear Records.
  • Interview with Dr. Lewis Porter.
  • Jazz clubs in luxury hotels. A few more I can think of immediately: Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse in New Orleans, the new Jazz at Lincoln Center franchise in Qatar.
  • "Rats on cocaine love Miles Davis ..." is the headline. The article makes fun of taxpayer-funded scientific studies, though the actual scientific abstract isn't quite as sensationalistic.
  • Destination: Out has posted music from the European large ensemble called Laboratorio della Quercia.
  • The Jazz Session spoke with guitarists Joel Harrison and Terrence McManus.
  • The Checkout sat down with saxophonist Wayne Escoffery and listened to Rudresh Mahanthappa's iPod.
  • Elsewhere at NPR Music:

  • : Urbane groove meets desert swing in the Now vs. Now and Third World Love double bill. Watch the concert live online.
  • Han Bennink interview on Fresh Air.
  • Alfredo Rodriguez interview on All Things Considered Saturday.
  • Video is now available for Alexis Cuadrado's "A Lorca Soundscape" concert.
  • Song Travels with Michael Feinstein features a session with classical musicians Joshua Bell and Jeremy Denk. Also, Bette Midler came on recently with a playlist.
  • JazzSet features pianist Martin Bejerano, both with his own trio and with Roy Haynes' band.
  • Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz features Kate McGarry.
  • Johnathan Blake was featured on Song of the Day, for his version of a Robert Glasper tune. (Glasper plays on it.)
  • Jenny Scheinman's Mischief and Mayhem release was reviewed on Fresh Air.
