American Indian Museum Plan Is on Track, But OKC Can Derail It

American Indian Museum

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The unfinished American Indian Cultural Center and Museum could soon get the final boost of funding needed to complete a vision that state policymakers first had two decades ago.

The Oklahoma Legislature must approve a $25 million bond plan and obtain and agreement with Oklahoma City before it can wash its hands of a project that has proved to be a thorn in their side.

Oklahoma City would inherit a potential moneymaker in a booming corridor of economic development, but would have to operate and maintain the 173,000-square-foot structure.

That's a daunting prospect that city officials had never envisioned and city manager Jim Couch says presents a lot of unanswered questions.
