All This Jazz: Recordings Made 50 Years Ago, in December '64, Including Coltrane's "A Love Supreme"

Tune in for the next installment of All This Jazz, which begins at 10pm on Saturday the 6th, right here on Public Radio 89.5...and online via live stream at PublicRadioTulsa.org. (We'll also offer, as always, a 7pm re-broadcast of ATJ on Sunday the 7th on Jazz 89.5-2, which is Public Radio Tulsa's all-jazz HD Radio channel.)

Each week, our program delivers 120 minutes of mighty fine modern jazz, both recent and classic, across a range of styles --- from Cannonball Adderley to John Zorn, from Mose Allison to Joe Zawinul. And the second hour of the broadcast always has a theme.

This time out, we'll go back half a century to cast our thematic spotlight on Jazz Recordings Made in December of 1964. We'll thus hear such standout albums from 50 years ago as John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil," Kenny Burrell's "Guitar Forms," and so on. (And to hear an appreciation of Coltrane's masterful four-part suite -- which the saxophonist called his "humble offering to God" -- check out this 2002 radio essay from NPR's Morning Edition. It's a terrific piece of music journalism from Ashley Kahn, the noted jazz writer and music historian whose books include "A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album.")

Also, in the first half of All This Jazz, we'll hear from pianist Kenny Werner, trombonist Dave Eshelman, drummer Michael Carvin, and more.

Join us! It's all kinds of jazz, and it's all kinds of fun. It's All This Jazz. (Playlist info can be found here, btw, and our Facebook page is at this link. Thanks.)

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
