Oklahoma City, OK – On a split vote, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission voted this morning for an 918 area code overlay to address the number shortage. That will mean everyone will keep their current numbers but all new numbers after 2012 will be assigned a different area code. You will eventually have to dial 10-digits to reach anyone in our area, even local calls.

Commissioner Dana Murphy voted against the overlay plan. She wanted the area to split into two different code areas.

After the Commission's decision today, the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) announced that the new area code will be 539. NANPA has estimated that the 918 area code will run out of phone numbers in the first quarter of 2012.
