918 Area Code

Oklahoma City, OK – Recommendation made for new area code

TULSA, Okla. (AP) An administrative law judge has recommended a method for creating new telephone numbers in Tulsa and surrounding areas.

This area, now served by the 918 area code, is expected to run out of telephone numbers by late 2011.

A judge seconded a recommendation by public utility staff members that the problem be fixed with an overlay, where a new area code would be set over the existing area code territory.

Current customers would keep their existing 10-digit numbers, but new customers would be assigned a new telephone number with a new area code. Cities such as Dallas use the overlay method.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission will make the ultimate decision. The commission regulates the telecommunications industry in Oklahoma.
