2 DHS Workers Charged in Serenity Deal Death

SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — Two former workers for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services have been charged in relation to the death of a 5-year-old girl who was allegedly beaten to death by her father last year.

The Pottawatomie County District Attorney on Friday charged Randy Lack and Jennifer Shawn with evidence suppression in the investigation. The charge is a misdemeanor.

Oklahoma City television station KOCO reports  that Serenity Deal was fatally beaten in 2011 and that her mother has filed a civil lawsuit against the DHS. Samantha Deal argues that DHS was wrong to have placed Serenity in custody of her father, Sean Brooks. Brooks was charged in the killing.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation into DHS conduct.
