John Durkee

News Director & Morning Edition anchor

John Durkee is the News Director for KWGS. He has over 35-years of experience in radio news and has served as News Director of radio stations in Tulsa, Missouri and Kansas.  He was also a reporter in Oklahoma City, early in his career. He is a Tulsa native and served as the City of Tulsa Communications Director prior to joining the staff at KWGS.

Durkee has won countless awards for his work as a broadcaster, including awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association, the Associated Press, United Press International, The Society of Professional Journalists and the Oklahoma and Missouri Association of Broadcasters.

He is a past board member of the Oklahoma Associated Press Broadcasters, the Kansas Association of News Broadcasters and the former Tulsa Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He resides in Bixby with his wife, Carol.

University of Oklahoma looks at admissions change

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — A new admissions policy under consideration by the University of Oklahoma would factor in criteria other than applicants' grades and test scores.

The school now grants automatic admission to students who meet GPA and class rank requirements and score at least a 24 on the ACT or a 1,090 on the SAT. The Oklahoman reports the university is considering a policy that would also factor in high school course rigor and essay questions.

Manning to be new TU head Basketball coach

The University of Tulsa has reached an agreement in principle with University of Kansas Assistant Coach Danny Manning on becoming the school’s 29th head basketball coach, Director of Athletics Ross Parmley announced this morning.

Manning, 46, is currently coaching with the NCAA Final Four-bound Kansas Jayhawks, thus the official news conference introducing Manning as the Golden Hurricane Head Coach will be held next week following the NCAA Championship.

I-44 is open again in Tulsa

Traffic is flowing again along Interstate-44 in Tulsa. The roadway was shut down at Peoria this morning following an accident involving two tractor trailer rigs.

The Tulsa Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials unit had to respond to the scene to aid in the clean-up.  The roadway was closed for almost three hours.

The wreck happened in the construction zone. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says no one was injured in the ordeal.
