John Durkee

News Director & Morning Edition anchor

John Durkee is the News Director for KWGS. He has over 35-years of experience in radio news and has served as News Director of radio stations in Tulsa, Missouri and Kansas.  He was also a reporter in Oklahoma City, early in his career. He is a Tulsa native and served as the City of Tulsa Communications Director prior to joining the staff at KWGS.

Durkee has won countless awards for his work as a broadcaster, including awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association, the Associated Press, United Press International, The Society of Professional Journalists and the Oklahoma and Missouri Association of Broadcasters.

He is a past board member of the Oklahoma Associated Press Broadcasters, the Kansas Association of News Broadcasters and the former Tulsa Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He resides in Bixby with his wife, Carol.

Large Fire in Owasso

Owasso Police block off 76th Street North at Main Street due to a large fire

Police have blocked off an area around 76th Street North and Main in Owasso. This follows a large fire at a strip-center at that location.

Among the businesses at the center is Dolphin Pools, a swimming pool supply house. Officials are worried about chlorine stored at the business.

While the area is sealed off, no evacuations have been ordered.

Mingo Reopened after Bomb Squad Called Out

Mingo Road  has reopened after being closed closed for about two hours. The roadway was closed by the Tulsa Police Bomb Squad. The action was taken after motorists reported seeing what appeared to be grenades. It turns out to have been smoke devices used in fireworks displays.

Fire Damages Brookside Home

Tulsa Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a late night fire in Brookside. A vacant home near 41st and South Peoria sustained extensive damage.

Fire officials are calling the fire suspicious because the home was vacant. The second story of the home sustained the most damage. The first floor has water and smoke damage.

No one was injured.

One Dead in Tulsa Head-On

A head-on crash late  Saturday night leaves one person dead and two more hospitalized.

Tulsa Police say the wreck happened on a two lane stretch of South Peoria, south of Brookside. Police say a car was attempting to pass another vehicle about 64th Street, when it crossed the center line and plowed head-on into an oncoming SUV.

Tulsa Police say a passenger in the car was dead at the scene. The driver of the car and the SUV were both hospitalized with injuries. The wreck happened about 11:30 Saturday night.
