More than $3M in Aid for Oklahoma Fire Vctims OK'd

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say state and federal assistance for victims of the wildfire in Creek County has reached more than $3 million.

Officials said Wednesday that figure includes nearly $2.9 million in housing assistance and more than $207,000 in Other Needs Assistance. Maximum grants of $31,400 each to 74 qualified applicants have been approved since the August 22nd presidential disaster declaration.

Officials say nearly 370 individuals and families have registered with FEMA.

NEW YORK (AP) — The parent of American Airlines says a "group of substantial creditors" might be willing to provide financing as part of the airline's bankruptcy reorganization plan.

Fort Worth-based AMR Corporation says in a court filing yesterday that the group "represents a substantial and diverse group of creditors of American."

The bankrupt airline maintains a maintenance facility in Tulsa.

Tanker Fire on I-44 near Kellyville

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A tanker truck fire has forced the closure of part of Interstate 44 in the Tulsa area.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says westbound lanes of the Turner Turnpike were closed at the Tulsa gate about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Eastbound lanes at Kellyville also were closed, but reopened around 5:35 p.m. yesterday.

Officials haven't released any details on the fire.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin says President Barack Obama and his policies are getting in the way of entrepreneurship and used an oilman's business success story as an example of pursuing the American dream.

During her speech, heard live on KWGS, Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., Fallin praised the nomination of Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan.

Fallin cited the important role Oklahoma plays in the nation's energy production and its low unemployment rate of 4.9 percent.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Longtime state and federal prosecutor Rob Wallace has defeated Muskogee seed seller Wayne Herriman for the Democratic Party nomination in Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District.

Wallace will try to keep the seat in Democratic hands this fall against a Republican nominee also selected Tuesday. Congressman Dan Boren announced last year he wouldn't seek re-election.

Isaac Now a Hurricane

CHAUVIN, La. (AP) — Isaac is continuing its approach toward the Louisiana coast, but now as a hurricane.

Forecasters say the storm reached hurricane status today, with top winds of 75 miles an hour. It could grow stronger by the time it reaches the swampy coast of southeast Louisiana tonight or early tomorrow.

As the storm approached, President Barack Obama warned residents along the Gulf Coast to heed the warnings of local authorities. He said, "Now is not the time to tempt fate."

Fallin, Cornett Both to Speak at GOP Convention

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Republican National Convention will have a distinct Oklahoma flavor, with both Gov. Mary Fallin and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett scheduled to speak.

Party officials announced Monday that Cornett is expected to address the convention in Tampa, Fla., at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. Fallin is scheduled to speak between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Oklahoma 2nd District Candidates Make Final Pitch

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Four men running for the state's only open congressional seat are making their final pitches to voters across eastern Oklahoma's sprawling 2nd District, encouraging voters to head to the polls for what is typically a low-turnout affair.

Two Republicans and two Democrats both square off in separate primary runoffs Tuesday in the race to replace the only Democrat in Oklahoma's congressional delegation, retiring U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, who decided not to seek a fifth term in office.

Wildfire Disaster Center to Open in Creek County

MANNFORD, Okla. (AP) — State and federal disaster officials say a disaster recovery center is to open in Mannford to help residents apply for aid as a result of wildfires earlier this month in Creek County.

Federal disaster aid was approved last week for residents who have uninsured or under-insured losses due to the fires that burned between Aug. 3 and Aug. 14.
