Oklahoma City – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma labor group representatives want the state's two U.S. senators to end their opposition to a bill that would extend unemployment benefits for laid-off workers.
Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn joined other Republicans last week in opposing an extension of unemployment benefits as part of a larger tax and spending package, citing concerns about adding to the budget deficit.
Muskogee, OK – Company plans wind tower facility in Muskogee
MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) A veteran steel fabrication entrepreneur says his new company plans to build a 175,000-square-foot wind turbine manufacturing facility in Muskogee.
Tom Word, the founder of Eagle Claw Fabrication LLC, says about 175 jobs should be created during the first phase of the project. Word says construction on the $28 million facility should begin in the third quarter of this year and it could open as early as next spring.
Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. drug bust nets alleged Mexican cartel leader
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Narcotics agents in Oklahoma say a high-ranking member of a Mexican drug cartel has been arrested in a sting operation.
Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward says it appears the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel have moved from Arizona to Oklahoma because of Arizona's new immigration law. He says 18 people were arrested Tuesday during raids in Elk City, Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Norman, Yukon, Mustang, and Tulsa.
Tulsa, OK – It is former Skiatook School Superintendent Gary Johnson who is named in those grand jury indictments handed down last week. Johnson was taken into custody yesterday accused of embezzlement and bribery.
The jury also reported it had "no confidence" in Johnson's interim replacement.
The investigation started in February, when a state audit turned up 750-thousand dollars wasted on over priced supplies.
Tulsa, OK – 129th East Avenue bridge over I-244 closed for deck repair through Thursday
The 129th East Avenue bridge over Interstate 244 will be closed through Thursday, July 1, for repair of a failure through the deck. Also, the outside westbound lane of I-244 under the bridge will be closed for motorists' safety during the repairs.
